The relationship between the two will be explained below. The object of our investigation is an aspect of foreign language teaching. We are concerned particularly with language teaching in secondary education, although the issue we address is significant in all kinds of language teaching throughout the world. That issue is variously called 'background or area studies' (in the English tradition) 'Landeskunde' (in Germany), 'teaching culture' (in North America) and 'civilisation' (in France). It will however become clear that we prefer the term 'cultural studies' and do not confine ourselves to the definitions and contents associated with the previous labels.
Models of learning which emphasise acquisition of procedures and understanding of cultural phenomena could shift the emphasis and reduce some of the difficulties, although the question of what is an appropriate analytical approach is still relevant. Learning theory for cultural studies is also still under-developed. Some contributions depend on work in social-psychology on the experience by migrants or immigrants of 'culture shock' a phenomenon recently analysed at length by Furnham & Bochner (1986).
