INTRODUCTION This chapter describes the pathologic characteristics of acute and chronic hepatitis B, as derived from our current knowledge of the biology of hepatitis B virus (HBV)I and of the immunopathology of the disease. 2 Since the precise mechanism of hepatocyte necrosis by HBV is still unknown, some of the information presented here is speculative.

Hepadnaviruses Long thought to be unique among animal viruses, HBV is now understood to belong to a family of unusual viruses, termed the hepadnaviruses (hepatotrophic DNA viruses).! In addition to HBV, currently classified as hepadnavirus type I, similar viruses have been identified in other species (Table I). It seems likely that other family members may be identified as investigations of the animal world for markers of hepadnaviruses are further explored. While HBV is the sole member of this family known to infect human beings and nonhuman primates (chimpanzees), HB Vrelated variants have been postulated to be responsible for some human hepatitis B-like infections in which conventional markers of HBV infection have not been found.
