Cultural Studies and Language Learning Stern’s wide-ranging and in many respects prescient survey of theories in language teaching makes a strong case for a clearer sociocultural dimension based on anthropology and sociolinguistics. He argues that despite attempts to assert the inter-relationship of language and culture in the 1970s and 1980s (Rivers, 1983; Seelye, 1984, 1988) and produce what he calls a ‘cultural syllabus’ (Stern, 1992): ‘the anthropological concept of culture has been much more difﬁcult to incorporate into language teaching than most of the writings have admitted so far’ (Stern, 1983).
So an interactional perspective on sociolinguistics (Gumperz, 1982a and see Chapter 3) links together the ﬁne-grained detail of face-to-face interactional processes with an understanding of how social knowledge enters into these processes. There is relatively more focus here on the detailed ways in which people, as they talk, create contexts for each other and so create and sustain social relations through talk. Whereas, in linguistic anthropology there is relatively more interest in how both spoken and written language represent aspects of cultural and social knowledge (see Chapter 4).
