To many enthusiasts an astronomical telescope of reasonable size represents a major outlay that may be hard to justify in the domestic budget when stacked up against the cost of keeping a car on the road, the money involved in keeping the house watertight and decorated, the price of the occasional holiday, and the sometimes unbelievable expense of rearing one or more children.

The aluminium coating on a mirror will last between two and ten years on average, less in a city and more in the country where the air is cleaner. A reputable seller of secondhand mirrors will replace the coating of a 'previously owned' mirror as a matter of course before he sells it. Useful piece of advice number 3.
